Brief presentation of the institution

School of Dental Medicine - Univ. of Zagreb is the only Dental school in Croatia. Its origins date back to 1948 when the Department of Odontology was established within the University of Zagreb Medical School. The School of Dental Medicine has became independent from the Medical School since the academic year 1962/1963, by decision of the Croatian Parliament (September 26th 1962).

At the end of 2001, the School of Dental Medicine was paid an official visit by the DentEd Thematic Network Project commission, funded by the EU Directorate for Education and Culture, as a part of the harmonization process to which dental education programs have been submitted under the Association of Dental Education in Europe.
Starting with the academic year 2005/06, undergraduate and postgraduate dental education has been carried out under the Bologna declaration, according to which each academic year merits 60 ECTS points.
Students begin their clinical courses after passing pre-clinic training courses. Each student learns to perform procedures on dummies, and then practices the acquired skills directly on patients.
The fouryear clinical program takes place in ergonomic spaces and on modern equipment. During their clinical education students are learning multidisciplinary (orthodontics, implantology, periodontology, prosthodontics, oral surgery, oral medicine, etc.) approach in order to solve possible complex rehabilitation cases.
The dental rehabilitation of each patient is conducted implementing the latest techniques and biocompatible materials.
There is a long tradition of research activity at the School of Dental Medicine. Research is conducted at each Department and in cooperation with research laboratories including the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb.
Research is also carried out within research projects under the patronage of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports, as well as under EU Framework Programmes (FP6, FP7).
The interdisciplinary character and signifi cant volume of published work contributed by employees, scientific novices, specializing students, and post graduate students make the School of Dental Medicine noticeable within the University of Zagreb.
The staff at the School of Dental Medicine regularly publishes the results of their research in numerous scientific journals.
The employees’ publishing activity is expressed both in writing and issuing University textbooks and manuals, as well as in translating dental publications from around the world.
Since 1966, the Dental School has been one of the publishers of the scientific journal Acta Stomatologica Croatica ISSN: 0001-7019 (Print) and ISSN 1846-0410 (Online) indexed in many secondary bibliographic data bases and available online at www.ascro.net.
Today the School of Dental Medicine consists of 8 different dental departments:

• Department of Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry
