Brief presentation of the institution

The DiSIT performs research in the field of the environmental sciences. The studies concern the biological and chemical analysis in different environments, soil and water remediation and health effects related to the exposure of environmental pollutants (i.e. toxic compounds). In recent years a new field of the research was based on the food sciences. In this context the research group of Hygiene study different aspect of food hygiene and microbiology in particular the application of innovative pasteurization technology (Pulsed Electric Fied) in liquid food. This work is performed in collaboration with the physicist of the DiSIT and with the supervision of Prof. E. Carraro (University of Torino).

Main Electroporation related topics

The aim of our research is evaluate the bacterial inactivation using Pulsed Electric Field (PEF) in relation to different parameter such as initial bacterial concentration in liquid media and mixing during PEF treatment. The experiments are performed on different microrganisms (E.coli O157:H7, Listeria and S. aureus).

- PEF system able to treat small volumes of static liquid that we have built and tested in our laboratories

- Laboratory of microbiology provided with different incubators (PBI International, WTBbinder) and biological safety cabinets with laminar flow rate

- Fluorescence microscopes (Axiolab, Zeiss) also with camera (Axiovert 100M, Zeiss)

- Cooled centrifuges (Beckman Coulter)

- Spectrophotometer (Beckman Coulter)

Part of research id dedicated to development and application of cultural and molecular microbiological method for the emrging pathogens detection in different environment (e.g. water, food, digestates)
