Brief presentation of the institution

The "Université de Technologie de Compiègne" (UTC) is a public university created in 1972, depending directly on the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It has a unique place within the French educational system as it combines the characteristics of the engineering "Grandes Écoles" and those of universities. Its three missions are education, research and technology transfer. UTC delivers Engineering degrees, Masters, and PhDs. There are 7 departments at UTC: Biological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Industrial Process Engineering, Mechanical Systems Engineering, Urban Systems Engineering, Technology and Human Sciences. It comprises 3600 Undergraduate students, 300 Masters students, 300 Postgraduate students, 350 teaching and research staff, 300 administration and services staff.

- Study of electroporation mechanisms in plant tissues and biosuspensions:
Quantification of the electrical disintegration of cell membranes. The degree of cell damage Z. Modeling of electroporation in plant tissue by  associating the microscopic methods with modelling of cell damage kinetics (theory of effective medium, Archie equation). Relation between structural parameters of plant tissue (geometry, anisotropy, morphology of the real tissue) and the degree of electroporation.

- Impact of electroporation on the physical properties of plant materials and biosuspensions:
Study of the mechanical, physico-chemical, acoustic, electro- and thermo-physical properties of plant materials and biosuspensions modified by electroporation.

- Impact of electroporation on the mass transfers in cell tissue and on the selective extraction of target cell compounds:
Study of mass transfers of solutes (sugars, polyphenols, proteins, etc.). Study the mechanisms of retention of intra- and extra- cellular compounds inside of plant tissue to control better the selectivity of extraction of target compounds. Simulation of mass transfers inside of electroporated tissues.

- Optimisation of electroporation and improving of industrial extraction/separation technologies:
Study on the macroscopic scale (laboratory pilots), the kinetics of extraction using pressure (pressing, centrifugation) and solvents (percolation, infusion) for the “electroporated” materials (food plants, biosuspensions). Modeling of pressing and solvent extraction by green solvents from electroporated plant materials and biosuspensions. Industrial realizations of extraction processes using the PEF treatment.

Research topics, techniques and equipment not related to Electroporation

The research laboratory “Processes for the Agro-resources and Environment” of the EA 4297 TIMR is at the crossroad of practical applications and scientific knowledge in process engineering aiming to develop agro-resources in a sustainable development context. This research laboratory encompasses faculty members from UTC Chemical Engineering Department and the Organic and Mineral Chemistry School (ESCOM) who are partner institutions. The specific topics to this laboratory concern: transformation processes for natural resources; extraction and separation of high value plant components; innovative technologies for foods and biomass and biosuspensions (pulsed electric field, ohmic heating, electrokinetic processes); thermo-chemical processes; preserving and treating; and implementation and design.
